While the rest of the world is busy chasing 5G speeds, HMD Global is going back to basics with a ruggedized twist. The company has unveiled the Nokia 123 Shield, a 2G feature phone built specifically for outdoor workers and those who need a device that can take a beating.
The standout feature here is the “Shield” branding, which translates to an IP65 rating. This means the phone is designed to withstand rain, splashes, sand, and dust. HMD hasn’t just slapped a rating on it; the phone features a slip-resistant texture on the sides for a better grip and includes rubber seals to keep the headphone and USB-C charging ports protected from the elements.
Main specs-wise, the Nokia 123 Shield a basic feature phone with a 2.4-inch display and a rear camera, both with low QVGA resolution. It’s powered by a Unisoc SC6531E processor paired with 4MB of RAM and 4MB of internal storage. While those numbers seem very modest by modern standards, they are optimized to run the S30+ operating system. If you want to expand storage capacity, the device includes a microSD slot that supports cards up to 32GB.
The device is powered by a 1,750 mAh removable battery, delivering up to 19 days of standby time and nearly 28 hours of talk time, according to HMD.
The phone maker claims it has optimized the device for clearer calls and a more reliable signal than previous 2G models like the Nokia 105, thanks to a new internal antenna structure.
Other practical additions include:
- USB-C Charging: A welcome modern touch for a budget device.
- A Mega-Torch: The rear LED flash doubles as a flashlight that is 300% brighter than the one found on the Nokia 110.
- Media Basics: You get a 3.5mm jack and FM radio.
The phone will be available in green and purple. While HMD is marketing the Nokia 123 Shield as “ultra-affordable,” we’re still waiting on the official pricing and regional availability. Unofficially, the phone is expected to cost around 35-40 EUR.
